KOFAVIV - Women's Commission of Victims for Victims

Since April of 2005 we have provided support for Kofaviv, a grassroots human rigths initiative based in Port au Prince. KOFAVIV was founded by women who had been victims of political rape during the 1991-1994 period of military rule in Haiti. The founders of KOFAVIV wanted to provide help and services to women who have been victims of violence in recent years. The result is a network of human rights monitors that work with women victims of violence, providing services to an average of 80 women each month. Read more.

Jean Marie Vincent Education Center in Gros Morne, Haiti

Since 1998 we have supported the development of a reforestation program in Haiti based at the Jean Marie Vincent Education Center in Gros Morne. The program has grown from a simple nursery in 1998, to a model forest of 150,000 trees on the slopes of Tet Mon. The current program includes the development of satellite nurseries throughout the parish of Gros Morne and a comunity organizer and trainer providing education to local communities on watershed protection and sustainable agriculture. Debt and Development

Haiti is the poorest country in the western hemisphere. And yet, the people of Haiti are still required to pay an unsustainable debt burden, much of which remains from the Duvalier government. The people of Haiti pay more in debt service each year than is spent on education and health services. We are joining with others to demand that Haiti international debt be cancelled immediately and without harmful conditions. Read more.

Haiti Solidarity Week

Every year in February we celebrate the success of the pro-democracy movement in Haiti. Haiti's first democratically elected President, Jean Bertrand Aristide took office on February 7, 1991. Though Aristide was removed as the result of a coup d'etat on September 30 that year, the movement for democracy remained vigilent. Haiti has since held three elections fairly contested. Though there have been setbacks, the movement has not been defeated. Join us in celebrating Haiti's democracy this year. Read more.
